Contemporary Magic
Derek DelGaudio
1984–
Biography
Derek DelGaudio is an American magician and theatrical artist whose work blurs the line between sleight of hand and contemporary narrative performance. He first gained notice as a world-class close-up magician before turning toward scripted theater that uses magic as a vehicle for ideas about identity, belief, and perception.
His acclaimed off-Broadway show In & Of Itself, later filmed and released for streaming, demonstrated that magic could sustain a serious, autobiographical evening of theater. DelGaudio's influence points toward a future in which conjuring is treated as a legitimate dramatic art rather than a novelty.
Why They Matter
He elevated magic to a respected form of contemporary narrative theater, focusing on identity rather than mere deception.
