Golden Age of Magic
Carter the Great
1874–1936
Biography
Charles Joseph Carter, known professionally as Carter the Great, was one of the last of the true grand touring magicians of the vaudeville and early motion picture era. His shows were massive, multi-truck productions that toured globally, bringing elaborate illusions, exotic backdrops, and dramatic storytelling to audiences in cities across the world. Carter was known for his 'Spirit Séance' and his large-scale illusions involving tigers and lions, elements that brought a sense of adventure and danger to his performances. Unlike many of his peers, Carter leaned heavily into the theatricality of his show, creating an atmosphere that suggested he was an explorer returning with secrets from the East. His legacy was cemented by his massive, visually arresting posters that promised a 'show of a thousand wonders.' Despite the financial pressures of touring such a large company, Carter persisted until the end of his life, representing the pinnacle of the grand-scale, world-traveling magic show that preceded the modern era of the stationary theater residency.
