Biography

Known as 'Herrmann the Great,' Alexander Herrmann was the premier American magician of the late 19th century. Born into a famous family of performers, he combined a flamboyant, charismatic stage persona with exceptional technical skill. His shows were a staple of the American entertainment circuit, featuring a mix of stage illusions, card manipulation, and the 'bullet catch'—one of his signature feats. Herrmann was known for his wit, his elaborate mustache, and his ability to dominate any stage he set foot on. He was a pioneer in the use of 'theatrical' magic, understanding that the audience’s belief was more important than the mechanism behind the trick. Following his death, his wife Adelaide Herrmann continued the show, performing with equal dexterity and power, making her one of the few female illusionists of her time to carry on a major act. Alexander Herrmann’s influence set the standard for what a professional stage magician should be in the American consciousness, helping to bridge the gap between vaudeville and the big-show era.
