Historical Significance

Keys, locks, restraints, and escape apparatus are closely associated with Harry Houdini’s historical identity and the public image that made him one of the most recognizable figures in the history of magic. This object is significant to the Collection because of its documented association with the Houdini collection and because it represents the material culture surrounding the magician whose name became virtually synonymous with escape.

The Story

The key entered The Upchurch Collection of Magic directly through Geno Munari, owner and proprietor of Houdini’s Magic Shop. It was accompanied by an older Certificate of Authenticity identifying the object as originating from the authentic Houdini Collection and bearing the signature of Sidney H. Radner. The survival of the key together with its documentation provides a tangible link not only to Houdini, but also to the generations of collectors and dealers who helped preserve and transmit Houdini-related material after his death.
